Krakkow Opera Festival 2011
"OPERA OF THE GENERATIONS – OPERA WITHOUT BORDERS" – 15th edition of the Krakow Opera Summer Festival
The first part of the festival – OPERA OF THE GENERATIONS – is to consist of educational events aimed primarily at children and youth. This part will include not only shows for younger audiences (such as Cinderella, The Book of the Forest, or Mr Marimba), but also various trainings, workshops, and events accompanying the performances.
An important point of the festival will be the premiere of Traviata, an opera classic by Giuseppe Verdi, on 18 June at the Main Stage of the Krakow Opera. The performance is directed by Krzysztof Nazar, the music is directed by Tomasz Tokarczyk, the costumes were designed by Zofia de Ines, and the sets were designed by Marek Braun. A student premiere of the opera is also planned.
About the Opera
The Krakow Opera has been staging performances since 1954. Its 65-piece orchestra plays music from the 18th through to the 21st century, both at performances, including operas, operettas, ballets or children’s shows, and as independent concerts. The Opera’s ensemble also includes 46 members of the choir, 24 ballet dancers, and 22 soloists. The Krakow Opera cherishes the popular pieces from the Classical and Romantic opera repertoire (from Mozart’s Don Giovanni to Puccini’s Madame Butterfly), and combines them, in particular, with 20th-century pieces. Those include the world premiere of Karol Szymanowski’s operetta Lottery for Husbands (Loteria na mezów, 2007), Viktor Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis (Der Kaiser von Atlantis, 2009) stylistically inspired by the paintings of Otto Dix, Krzysztof Penderecki’s drama The Devils of Loundun and Marta Ptaszynska’s children’s show Mr Marimba. The ongoing repertoire contains 18 pieces, which are complemented with 6 premieres during the season, and a total of approximately 160 spectacles are staged per year.
