Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900 Exhibition in National Gallery of Denmark 2011

Danish and Nordic Art 1750-1900 Exhibition Opens 28 May. New display of the permanent collection 2011

From the birth of Danish painting through the famous Golden Age of Danish art to the dawn of Modernism.

The major features of Danish and Nordic art over 150 years are unfolded in a display that features both an historic overview and special themes of immediate relevance to contempoary life, while also focusing on artists of particular importance. At the same time, this display casts light on some of the more overlooked chapters in the history of Danish art.

The new display is generally chronological. However, at the same time, the most recent research is also featured, which includes the artists and works that break tradition. These contemporary views challenge and disturb past discussions.

The main story and the disruptive undercurrent
Beneath the overall French-inspired main story: Juel, Eckersberg, sketches, folk painting, naturalism, Philipsen, Skagen and Fynboerne, there is an underlining story that can be described as the romantic-idealistic undercurrent. You can meet this undercurrent in both thematic rooms and disruptive elements underway.
