Essential Information for Candidates

The competition is open to dancers who have passed the Academy’s Advanced 2 Examination in classical ballet with Distinction or have been presented with the Solo Seal Award. Applicants must be current members of the RAD. Candidates must be aged between 15 and 19 on the closing date and be of pre-professional status and may not have been employed on a professional contract prior to entry of the competition.

If you have been offered a professional engagement, which commences after the last day of advice for results you will still be eligible to enter the competition. Evidence is required of the relevant qualification held.

Due to the high entry criteria, all candidates enter the competition as Semi-finalists so there is no elimination procedure for candidates prior to the competition. Candidates are also expected to choose and prepare two classical variations, one from a list of 19th century classical variations  and a list of 20th century variations in advance of the competition. Candidates will receive coaching on these variations over the Genée week and they will also have a new solo, made on them which they will have to learn and perform at the Semi-finals.

Candidates pay a set fee (£350) for a unique week-long creative experience; coaching from world-renowned repetiteurs and choreographers including full room and board. Candidates are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the host country.

Medals & Prize Money

Three medals are usually awarded – gold, silver and bronze – in a male and female category. They are awarded completely at the Judges’ discretion and as such a gold medal is not always awarded in both categories.

- The gold medal is accompanied by £5,000 prize money or equivalent currency
- The silver medal is accompanied by £3,000 prize money or equivalent currency
- The bronze medal is accompanied by £2,000 prize money or equivalent currency
