Nata Pirskalava, "Elusive Return to Images"
Can we find a resistant and satisfactory meaning somewhere behind the countless attempts to define the object of art? Is it possible to return to an 'original' image that contains nothing but the actions and emotions we put in it ourselves?
In "Elusive Return to Images" the Georgian artist Nata Pirskalava searches for the delicate boundary at which the visible meets the imaginary. The multimedial quality of her works places them in the interstices between science and art. Her installation, consisting as it does of photographic material, video projections and 3D-models, proposes a path towards the idea of 'pure' image. Her aim is to release the image from previous reflective definitions and thereby grant room to those unfamiliar, non-intentional hunches that people tend to create in their minds.
By the use of mirror reflections, Pirskalava's pictures "take in" the exhibition rooms themselves as an integral part of the show. The movement of the viewer is constantly adjusted in relation to the position of the works. Such an interaction forces the onlooker to dive into the illusionary contents of the image, thereby challenging the perception of photography as a one-dimensional reality. The gallery spaces takes on a virtual and tangible aspect, consistent with the idea of photography as a multidimensional media. The status of photography becomes re-defined as a three-dimensional stage on which the viewer wanders around, both thoughtful and investigative.
By such means Pirskalava comments on the many struggles between ideas, concepts and images that have marked the art scene of the 20th century. Making room for an image that speaks for itself, without necessarily knowing the concept behind it, gives rise in the viewer to fresh thoughts and sensations. By such syntheses, a new sort of art-existence is born.
Nata Pirskalava was born in Georgia (1974) and educated at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts (Georgia) and the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Her works have been exhibited in Russia, Slovakia, Israel and Georgia. The current exhibition - with installations made specifically for Galleri Image - is her first in Denmark.
