The Mountain Bird from Grusomhetens Teater 2010

Last year, Grusomhetens Teater made theatre history when they presented the world premiere of Ibsen’s unfinished opera libretto The Mountain Bird.
Grusomhetens Teater places national romanticism in the spotlight with it’s image of naive, innocent Norwegian peasants. The story is based on the myth of the Jostedal Grouse, a girl who wandered around the Norwegian mountain wilds during the Black Death. The performance is melodramatic, expressive and stylised; the costumes often appear to be taken right out of ‘Bridal Journey in Hardanger’ (19th century national romanticist painting by Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude) and the music is inspired by folk music, as well as more contemporary genres. Grusomhetens Teater has become known for performances that draw their fundamental inspiration from theatre legend Antonin Artaud’s vision of an anatomical theatre.
