First performance: Dresda, Hofoper, 25th January, 1909. Opera in one act to the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal from the tragedy by Sophocles of the same name. Centred around the character of a female figure devoured by sensuality, in a highly dissonant score with an uproarious sound, the singing is shrill, exasperated, almost scream-like. Presented at the Teatro Costanzi on the 7th February, 1912 protagonist Emma Carelli accompanied by Maria Mareck (Clitemnestra), Emilia Figoriti (Crisotemide), Luigi Marini (Egisto), Giulio Cirino (Oreste). Following the edition of the 1939/1940 season with Angelica Cravcenco, of particular note is the edition in 1951/1952 under the baton of the great Hans Knappertsbusch. Successive editions in the 1979/1980 seasons with Lovro Von Matacic, in 1996/97 and most recently in 2004 with conductor Will Humburg director Hening Brockhaus, Janis Baird (Elektra), Karen Armstrong (Clitemnestra), Tina Kieberg (Crisotemide), Stuart Kale (Egisto), Hartmut Welker (Oreste).
