Sculpture workshop at Yorkshire Sculpture Park 2011

Led by Marcia Bennett-Male the Stone Carving courses are open to all levels. The majority of participants are first time carvers together with experienced artists who want to experiment with stone.

Each five day course provides an opportunity to work the stone in the round or on a relief based carving. There is a heavy emphasis on working with hand tools from start to finish. The courses are for people wishing to try a finer, more detailed style of carving and participants are advised to bring several ideas with them. There will be a short one-on-one discussion with Marcia to determine what is possible within the week, at the beginning of each course.

- The five day stone carving courses will run from 10am-4pm each day outdoors on the Sculpture Course site (wet weather shelters are erected prior to the course.)

- The courses are suitable for all abilities (ages 18 and upwards), all that is required is enthusiasm and suitable clothing. All materials and PPE (gloves & masks) are provided. Strong or steel toe capped boots are advised.

- Stone most commonly used on the courses for carving is Ancaster and Clipsham.

- Concessionary places are available to those over 60 years of age, one bursary place per course is available to students in full time education on an arts related course.

Marcia Bennett -Male studied for a Fine Art degree and then went on to train as an architectural stone carver and letter cutter. She was later granted the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Award to go on to study stone masonry.

Her work includes commissions for Dulwich Picture Gallery London; Stowe Boarding School, Buckinghamshire; The Peace Gardens and Wentworth Castle, South Yorkshire. Her work encompasses stone masonry, lettering and marble work as well as sculpture. She has exhibited her artwork extensively throughout the UK as well as the USA and Mexico.
