After the audience successes with Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, the international team has been gathered again, with director Olivia Fuchs, stage designer Niki Turner and conductor Gior-dano Bellincampi in the driving seat – this time for Il trovatore, the last part of the maestro’s popular trilogy. Il trovatore is a sparkling menu of musical morsels in an ebullient score, as well as a plot full of mysterious complications and terrible revenge, and is with good reason one of the most beloved and most frequently performed of all operas. The Chorus of the Danish National Opera plays a central role in the big scenes of Il trovatore, including the famous Gypsy Chorus, where the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra will also be in focus with both tender singable music and powerful anvil strokes!
It is 30 years since Il trovatore was last performed at the Danish National Opera, in 1981, and beyond that it has only been performed once, in 1966.

Il trovatore – the story and the music Verdi saw that the play that inspired the work offered the opportunity to compose a music drama with the big emotions like love, hate, jealousy, maternal and filial love and the urge for freedom. The story ends tragically in death, like its predecessor Rigoletto from 1851 and the subsequent La Traviata, which was premiered just three months after Il trovatore in 1853.
The plot may seem complicated and the work is often criticized for being too unrealistic. But the intense drama also makes the opera relevant. The characters in Il trovatore are precisely multi-faceted figures who basically want to be happy, but who all make mistakes and are driven by a destructive thirst for revenge and love. Verdi was particularly fascinated by the Azucena figure, torn between the love of her mother and the mother’s desire for revenge, and love of her stepson Man-rico (the troubadour), who was really meant to be the victim of her revenge.
The work is full of musical energy, wonderful melodies and fantastic choruses. Particularly beautiful musical passages in Il trovatore are Manrico’s romance Deserto sulla terra, Azucena’s song Stride la vampa and the beloved Gypsy Chorus. The music has both aristocratic calm and Gypsy seduc-tiveness with a special, hidden artistic pattern that creates an underlying tension between music and drama.
