Experience one of Japan's leading and most innovative ceramic artists in a five day master class.
Shozo is an excellent teacher and and inspiring world class ceramic artist. Shozo will be demonstrating his unique process of cutting and facetting work that is then expanded on the wheel to produce his dynamic sculptural forms. Each student will have a wheel and will be able to explore these new techniques alongside Shozo.
To benefit from this course a reasonable skill level on the potter's wheel is necessary.
This is a 'making' workshop. The course will focus on the wheel as a creative tool and explore the following areas:
- Altering forms
- Composite forms
- Faceting and cutting clay
- Making stamps
- Decorating on the wheel
- Textural clays
- Tea bowls, teapots, bottle vase forms, lidded pieces etc.
- Large-scale work
Shozo Michikawa was born in Hokkaido in 1953. He studied at Aoyama Gakuin University, from where he graduated in 1975. He lives and works in Seto, Aichi. He has exhibited widely in Japan and also in the Philippines, Mongolia, France, New York and London. In 2005 he was honoured with an exhibition at the Forbidden City in Beijing.
Each pot, whether a vase or one of his gently dished chargers with their subtle curves made me think about the Buddhist reverence for the natural world. Time passing, leaves falling and the sound of water wearing rock all came to mind. Under Shozo’s dexterous hands, the elements of earth, air, fire and water are fused together in harmony.
The International Ceramics Studio
The International Ceramics Studio (ICS) is a ceramic art centre located eighty kilometres south of the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
The ICS was created in Kecskemét on the initiative of Hungarian artists who had felt culturally and ideologically isolated. It was the wish for freedom and the desire to work alongside international artists that led to the founding of the centre.
The mission of the studio is to promote the formal, aesthetic and technical development of ceramics and to help foster creative skills. The studio is open to all challenges of ceramic research, design and experiment. With this in mind the ICS offers modern facilities and kilns, ample studio space and technical support.
Since it's foundation in 1978, the ICS has been maintained by the local council of Bacs Kiskun County, which is famous for supporting culture.
Our facilities give artists an excellent opportunity to concentrate on their work in a creative and mutually supportive environment where new and imaginative ideas can be explored and realised.
