The Sagamuseum - Reykjavík 2011

A lot of experience has been gathered in making of the Sagamuseum. The method used in making the figures in silicon was developed by Ernst Backman the owner of the museum and he has started a company called Saga Design, which makes figures by using this method.

The Sagamuseum transports you to the Viking Age and brings back to life renowned figures and major events in Icelandic history. The Museum is located in Perlan Reykjavík.

The Sagamuseum intimately recreates key moments in Icelandic history, moments that determined the fate of our people and which give a compelling view into how Icelanders have lived and thought for more than a millenium.

In this vibrant, multimensional museum, both Icelandic and foreign visitors are given an opportunity to learn about Icelandic history in a way that is both educational and fun.

For the first time you can see historical figures and major events in Icelandic history from the time of the earliest settlers right up to that of the Reformation, brought to life in a unique and exciting way.

Life-like replicas of historical Icelandic figures have been created, based on descriptions found in the Viking sagas and chronicles. In using silicon instead of wax makes the figures more life-like and you can almost see them breath. In order to achieve authenticity, clothing, weapons and everyday objects were constructed using traditional methods passed down through the ages. The weapons were specially crafted and the wool and linen articles dyed by hand. All wooden artifacts have been treated in a way that both enhances their appearance and make them look genuinely old.
