20th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth, Szafarnia 11 - 13 May 2012


Alberto Nose, laureate of many international piano competitions, International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw included, will play piano recital on 10th of May.

Opening concert will take place on 10th of May 2012 at 6 pm in Great Hall in Dwor Artusa in Torun.

Regulations

I.

1. The Twentieth International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth is organized by the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia, a cultural institution of the kujawsko-pomorskie province. The Competition will take place from 11th to 13th May, 2012.

2. The Jury will include prominent pianists and pedagogues from Poland and abroad.

3. Young pianists in four age categories can take part in the competition
a) group I – for born in 2003, 2004, 2005, (primary school, forms I-III)
b) group II – for born in 2000, 2001, 2002 (primary school, forms IV-VI)
c) group III – for born in 1997, 1998, 1999 (middle school, forms I-III)
d) group IV – for born in 1995, 1996 (secondary school, forms I, II)

4. The number of participants is limited to 50.

5. This year’s Competition must not be entered by the 1st prize winners in the last year’s edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin for Children and Youth Competition.

6. The Competition must not be entered by those who are students of any members of the Jury.

7. The Competition is open to people who are not attendants of State Music Schools.

II.

1. Competition applications must be written on special Application Sheet available to download on webside of Chopin Centre (others will be not accepted). The attached form must be written in Polish or English and must be sent by 15th March, 2012 to:

enclosing:
· a short biographical note (in Polish or English);
· a photocopy of passport or birth certificate (translated into Polish or English);
· two recent photographs in traditional and electronic form;
· confirmation of application by the school with a brief opinion of the participant’s achievements
· a list of pieces prepared for the Competition with the composer’s full name, title of the piece, its opus or number
· the surname of the teacher preparing for the Competition
· information on which group the soloist will perform in

2. An entry fee for Polish participants in PLN, foreign in Euro is:
age category I and II – PLN 150,00 or EUR 40
age category III and IV – PLN 200,00 or EUR 60

3. The costs of an entry fee transfer are carried by the participants or the delegating institutions.

4. Entries are accepted by postmark date (the order of entries). In case the number of applicants exceeds the number specified by the regulations, the selection is performed by the Jury on the basis of an applicant’s achievements.

5. Any applications sent after 15th March, 2012 will not be accepted.

III.

1. All candidates will receive a confirmation of application by 10th April, 2012 with information regarding accommodation at hotels in which they are to stay for the
time of the Competition. They are to make the reservations themselves.

2. The candidates whose applications are rejected will receive the refund of the entry fee after the cost transfer deduction.

3. The entry fee is not refundable if a participant does not appear at the competition hearing or withdraws from the competition after 10th April, 2012.

4. All competitors will have the opportunity to audition in the Concert Hall of the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia. The date and time of the audition along with the schedule of auditions will be sent to participants with a confirmation of application.

5. Participation in the Competition involves the following costs:
· the cost of transportation from one’s place is carried by the participants themselves
· the organizing party pays for the accommodation of participant at the hotel (reservations are made by the participant)
· the organizing party provides free transfer to the place of the hearings for all participants accommodated outside Szafarnia without access to own means of transport
· the accompanying persons – carers, are to pay for the transport as well as accommodation themselves
· the organizing party provides free transfer for the accompanying persons – carers to the place of the hearings if they do not have access to their own means of transport

IV.

Competition Programme for specific groups:
I age group
1. Jan Sebastian Bach – one composition – choice is made by participant

2. Fryderyk Chopin – one composition – choice is made by participant

3. Any virtuoso composition.
The piece should last no longer than 12 minutes.

II age group
1. Jan Sebastian Bach: one composition – choice is made by participant
2. Fryderyk Chopin: one composition – choice is made by participant
3. Any virtuoso composition.
Not more than 15 minutes.

III age group
1. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven sonataallegro
form, one chosen
2. Fryderyk Chopin: any Waltz composition
3. Fryderyk Chopin: any Mazurka composition:
4. A selected virtuoso composition.
Not more than 25 minutes.

IV age group
1. J.Haydn, W.A.Mozart, L.van Beethoven: one selected sonata-allegro form.
2. Fryderyk Chopin: any nocturne composition
3. Fryderyk Chopin – Mazurka A minor Op. 17 no. 4 (an obligatory composition)
4. Any virtuoso composition including Étude by F. Chopin.
5. One piece of F. Chopin selected from the following: Impromptu, Scherzo,
Ballade, Berceuse, Barcarolle.
6. Special prize for the participant performing I or II part of the E minor Concerto or I or III part of F minor Concerto of F. Chopin with a string quartet. It can be performed instead of an optional composition.
7. For volunteers there is a special prize of the Rector of The Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, besides the obligatory programme, for the best interpretation of
Karol Szymanowski’s works, one Prelude Op. 1 without 3 and 6.

2. Additional prizes:
The Pablo Sarasate Conservatory in Pamplona (Spain) prize – concert in Pamplona. Travel and accommodation costs are carried by the Organizing Party – the choice is on the Jury. The Consul of The Republic of Poland in Navarra prize, the Basque country, and La Roja Angela Tellechea Goyena. The prize of the Rector of The Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz for the best performance of Karol Szymanowski’s work. Special prize of Infocomp company (computer)

V.
1. The Jury is selected by the organizer of the Competition: the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia.
2. The Jury’s verdict is final and cannot be appealed against.
3. Only the Jury gives prizes and awards. The decisions are final and nonclaimable.
4. The prizewinners from the individual age groups are obliged to perform in the prizewinners’ concert as well as accompanying events with no additional payment.
5. The prizewinners’ concert and the presentation of awards will take place on 13th May. The programme of the concert is decided on by the Jury.

VI.

1. The organizers reserve the right to use and publish sound, radio and TV recordings as well as photographs taken during the competition without an additional payment for the contestants.
2. Applying for the competition will be treated by the organizers as accepting all the conditions in the regulations without appeal.

The prizewinners of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia of 2011 performed in Pamplona (Spain) during Chopin Days together with the Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Pablo Sarasate Music Conservatory (concerts in Spain and in Poland); and in Budapest – Hungary ( prize of György Ferenczy Foundation from Budapest ).
