Alenka Bartl - The First Lady of Slovene Costume Design

Venue: National Gallery of Slovenia, Entrance hall
Location: Ljubljana, Slovenia
Date: 12 April – 24 June 2012

Opus of one of the most visible and most respected Slovene costume designers, Alenka Bartl, is extremely prolific (more than 400 theatre costume designs) and diverse (drama, opera and ballet performances, as well as television work – among others she came up with the designs for the costumes for the famous series of Decameron – and also the film).
She has contributed to the affirmation of professional costume design through her teaching work, initially at the School of Design and later as a full professor at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre Film and Television and at the Academy of Fine Art and Design.
She has worked with virtually all major Slovene (and former Yugoslav) directors. She sees costume design not only as “clothes” for a theatrical setting, but as a “common cultural and civilizational sign”.
Alenka Bartl has taken part in a number of Yugoslav and international exhibitions with her costume sketches (several times in the Prague Quadrennial, in exhibitions in Tokyo, Shanghai, etc.) and has received numerous awards, including the greatest, the Prešeren Award for Lifetime Achievement (1989). The exhibition will present her most attractive costumes, video footage of theatre and film performances, as well as original sketches and drawings.
