Jarno Vesala has been selected as the Young Artist of the Year 2013. Vesala will receive 20,000 euros grant awarded by the City of Tampere and supported by Nokia plc, own publication as well as an opportunity to hold private exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum.

Jarno Vesala is the 29th Young Artist of the Year. He lives in Nokia and works in Tampere. Jarno Vesala (b. 1977 in Rauma) graduated in 2004 from Tampere University of Applied Sciences, School of Art and Media. He held his first private exhibition in 2003 in Tampere and has also participated in collective exhibitions ever since. The committee making the decision was chaired by Taina Myllyharju, Director of the Tampere Art Museum, and included as members Chief Curator Tapani Pennanen, Curator Leevi Haapala, Curator Laura Köönikkä, and artists Hannu Ojala, Janne Laine and Katariina Salmijärvi.

The nationwide Young Artist of the Year event was born in 1984 of the initiative of the Tampere Junior Chamber of Commerce. The event is organized by the Tampere Art Museum and the City of Tampere, and the committee includes representatives of the Tampere Art Association, the Tampere Artists’ Association and the Artists’ Association of Finland. The purpose of the event is to spotlight young, talented artists and to attract attention to new Finnish pictorial art and its phenomena.
