Bethanien GmbH

The Bethanien was built between 1845 and 1847 as a humble hospital - which visitors may find hard to believe when they see the impressivness of the edifice.

By 1974 it was, even more incongruously, nothing but a squatter's residence and was due to be demolished. However campaigners intervened with a vision to save the building and the Bethanien GmbH organisation was born. Nowadays the old hospice acts as a an events venue, project workshop, and the publisher of a series of catalogues as well as a magazine - all with the idea of furthering contemporary art and artists. The three exhibition studios welcome the casual tourist from Wednesday to Sunday, between 2pm and 7pm, to come and see their latest shows.
