Russian genre painting of the 19th – The first quarter of the 20th century

The painting exhibition will be working till 20 March, 2011 at Belarusian National Art Museum

The history of arts has been overruled by a kind of disbelief towards genre painting for quite a long period of time. When, in 1863, the young Russian artists headed by Ivan Kramskoy have left the walls of the Academy of Arts of St. Petersburg in a stage manner (the event, having left its mark in the history as “Revolt of the Fourteen”), they were struggling both for the right of a future artist’s independence in his own choice of a theme and subject for his narrative art piece, and for genre painting’s acknowledgement as a true and valid artistic genre. “Aren’t genre artists any more deemed to be painters at all?” – Fyodor Bruni, the Head of the then existing Academy of Arts, was asked by one of the participants of the Revolt.
