The name and the selection of repertoire bind the Ensemble with its own region. The Ensemble performs stylized folklore. In its programme it has, among other things, songs and dances of Upper Silesia, Zaglebie Dabrowskie, the Beskidy Mountains and Zywiec. The dancers present the programme wearing original folk costumes showing their beauty and richness of colour to the spectators. Both students of other Silesian colleges are the members of the Ensemble. New members to the Ensemble are also recruited from the senior years of secondary schools.
One of founders of "Katowice" was, no longer alive, the choreographer Józef Zielina. His long-standing collaboration with the Ensemble flourished with many magnificient choreographies. Some of them, like e.g. "Spring in the Beskidy Mountains" or "Krakowiak", are still present in the Ensemble's repertoire.
Wladyslaw Byszewski, also no longer with us, was the author of beautiful compositions and musical arrangements of many songs, folk melodies and whole collections of dances.
Stanislaw Wodnicki was collaborating with the Ensemble throughout the years, leading the band and playing the accordion at the same time. He is the person to whom the band owes, to a large degree, their interestingly arranged musical programme.
Among many directors of "Katowice" it is hard not to mention Ryszard Lorens - a magnificent organizer and a manager of the group and Urszula Moron - a long-term director and a main organizer of consecutive editions of the International Students' Folklore Festival, which has recently taken place in the area of Katowice, Sosnowiec, Chorzów and Ogrodzieniec.
Students' Folk Ensemble "Katowice" performs mainly in the regions of Silesia and Zaglebie Dabrowskie but also abroad. The beauty of Polish folklore presented by the ensemble "Katowice" was admired by the audience in Spain, Germany, Russia, Lithuania, Portugal, Syria, Tunisia, Cyprus, France, Belarus, Moldova, Hungary, Brazil, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, and recently in Mexico and the United States of America.
